Ghana international Gideon Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga side Cologne after his contract with AJ Auxerre expired. The 27-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal with the German club, as confirmed by Cologne’s official website. Mensah departs Auxerre after four seasons with the club, during which he made 114 appearances and won a Ligue 2 title in 2024.
Auxerre acknowledged Mensah’s departure with a statement praising his commitment and professionalism, noting he would leave a “very beautiful image” with the club and its supporters. The Burgundian club, which finished 15th in Ligue 1 last season, had already begun preparing for Mensah’s exit by signing Sékou Fofana, a 23-year-old Franco-Ivorian defender from Lausanne-Sport, on a four-year contract on July 8th.
Cologne’s director general, Thomas Kessler, expressed the club’s long-standing interest in securing Mensah’s services. Kessler highlighted Mensah’s international experience, noting his recent appearance in the World Cup round of sixteen with Ghana against Colombia, where they lost 1-0. He also praised Mensah’s performances in France last season, emphasizing his tactical discipline, defensive qualities, and dynamism.
Kessler stated that Mensah is a team-oriented player who will add stability and quality to Cologne’s squad, which finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season. The addition of Mensah addresses a need for defensive reinforcement as Cologne aims to improve its position in the league. This move provides Mensah with the opportunity to experience a new league and contribute to a club with ambitions for growth.
