Ghana international Gideon Mensah has signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga side Cologne after his contract with AJ Auxerre expired. The 27-year-old defender joins the German club as a free agent, bringing an end to his four-season spell with the Ligue 1 outfit. Auxerre confirmed Mensah’s departure in a statement, praising his commitment and impact during his time at the club.
Mensah made 114 appearances for Auxerre, winning a Ligue 2 title with them in 2024. He recently featured for Ghana in the World Cup, playing in their round of 16 defeat to Colombia. Auxerre had already begun preparing for Mensah’s exit, signing Sékou Fofana from Lausanne-Sport on a four-year deal on July 8th.
Cologne’s director Thomas Kessler expressed the club’s delight at securing Mensah’s signature, highlighting his international experience and strong performances in France. Kessler stated that Mensah’s tactical discipline, defensive qualities, and dynamism will be valuable assets to the team. He believes the player will significantly strengthen the stability and quality of Cologne’s squad.
Cologne finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season and will be hoping Mensah’s arrival will shore up their defence. The move represents a chance for Mensah to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues and continue his international career. His ability to play multiple positions across the defence could prove particularly useful for Cologne throughout the season.
