Olivier Giroud has indicated a willingness to remain with Lille beyond the current season, potentially playing on until his 40th birthday in September. The forward expressed his affection for the club following their defeat to Auxerre on Sunday, praising the welcoming atmosphere he found upon arrival.
Speaking to Ligue 1+, Giroud stated he felt immediately integrated into the Lille squad and enjoyed working with the entire staff. He highlighted the strong relationships he has formed at the club and expressed satisfaction with his contribution to their Champions League qualification. Lille secured third place in Ligue 1, guaranteeing them a return to Europe’s premier club competition.
While no decision has been made, Giroud confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the club regarding a potential contract extension. He reiterated his desire to continue playing as long as his body allows, emphasizing that his motivation remains high. “In general, one says that when one feels good somewhere, one must not try to look for greener grass elsewhere,” he said.
Giroud rejoined Lille in September 2023, returning to the club where he began his professional career. He had previously spent a season with the club in 2008, scoring 13 goals in 33 appearances before moving to Tours. His career has since included successful spells with Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea, and AC Milan, culminating in a return to France with Lille. He has been a consistent goalscorer throughout his career, and his experience and leadership have been valuable assets for Lille this season. A potential return to Arsenal, where he previously enjoyed a successful period, has been speculated about due to Lille’s Champions League qualification and a possible fixture against his former club.
The possibility of Giroud extending his stay at Lille would provide continuity and experience to their attack, as they prepare for the challenges of Champions League football. It also reflects his continued ambition to compete at the highest level.
