Olivier Giroud is poised to sign a contract extension with Ligue 1 side LOSC, according to L’Équipe. The 37-year-old forward, who has become a key figure for Lille, is expected to remain in the north of France for a sixteenth European campaign after helping the club qualify for the Champions League this season.
Giroud has been Lille’s top scorer this season with 11 goals in 44 matches, demonstrating continued goalscoring ability despite his age. This potential extension comes as no surprise, with Lille’s director Olivier Létang recently stating on RMC that Giroud “still has the flame and the desire” and that he believes the veteran can continue to contribute significantly to the team. His experience and leadership are clearly valued by the club.
The forward’s career has seen him play for a number of prominent clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, before returning to France with AC Milan and then joining Lille. He is also the all-time leading scorer for the French national team, a record he continues to add to. His move back to Ligue 1 was seen as a chance to continue playing at a high level and contribute to a competitive team.
Alongside Giroud, Aïssa Mandi, Nabil Bentaleb, and Thomas Meunier are also nearing the end of their contracts with Lille. However, their situations are expected to be resolved later, as all three players have been called up for international duty, specifically for participation in the upcoming Copa América. The club is currently focused on securing Giroud’s future, with the other contract negotiations likely to progress after the tournament.
Lille have also recently appointed Davide Ancelotti as their new head coach, replacing Bruno Genesio. The appointment of Ancelotti signals a new era for the club, and retaining Giroud’s experience will be crucial as they navigate this transition and compete in the Champions League next season.
