Joe Gomez will remain at Anfield for the upcoming season, reversing earlier indications he could depart, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce. The 29-year-old had previously stated his future was uncertain as he entered the final year of his contract, but with Ibrahima Konate’s move to Real Madrid and injuries to other defenders, Liverpool have opted to retain his versatility. Gomez can play multiple positions across the backline, a factor in the club’s decision.
Liverpool are also intensifying their pursuit of Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez as a replacement for Konate, TEAMtalk reports. The 22-year-old Ecuadorian has impressed in three seasons with Brugge and is valued around £40million. Numerous Premier League clubs have shown interest, but Liverpool’s scouting department believe Ordonez possesses the qualities to succeed at Anfield. Other defensive targets include Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, Benfica’s Antonio Silva, and Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, alongside domestic options like Jan Paul van Hecke of Brighton.
Konate’s departure leaves a void in Liverpool’s defence, particularly with Virgil van Dijk also entering the final year of his contract. Jeremy Jacquet is set to join from Rennes, but is unproven at the Premier League level. The potential arrival of Andoni Iraola as the new manager appears to be influencing recruitment, with the club actively seeking defensive reinforcements.
Additionally, Liverpool are monitoring West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who has been given permission to leave the relegated club. Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested, with West Ham reportedly demanding over £80million for the 21-year-old. The situation surrounding Sporting’s Yan Diomande is also developing, with updates from Fabrizio Romano suggesting a potential swift resolution. The club also sought advice from outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp before pursuing Iraola.
