Anthony Gordon’s move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, confirmed in May, currently stands as the most expensive transfer of the summer window, costing the Spanish club £69.3 million. The 25-year-old winger joins Barcelona after three-and-a-half years with Newcastle, where he scored 39 goals, giving the English club a profit of approximately £25-30 million on the deal.
Gordon expressed his delight at joining Barcelona, stating it was always his dream to play for the club and describing it as “the biggest club on the planet.” He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with playing for Barcelona but affirmed his readiness for the challenge, even speaking in Spanish at his unveiling. He has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2031.
Beyond Gordon’s headline move, several other significant transfers have been completed. Liverpool have secured Centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for an initial £55 million, with potential for an additional £5 million in add-ons, making him Rennes’ most expensive sale ever. Jacquet has signed a contract until 2031, bolstering Liverpool’s defensive options.
Tottenham Hotspur have also been active, successfully completing a £52 million deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke, reuniting him with former manager Roberto De Zerbi. Chelsea have seen left-back Marc Cucurella move to Real Madrid for £47.5 million, with potential for further add-ons. Meanwhile, Chelsea have invested in the future with the £42.9 million signing of 19-year-old winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP, a deal that was initially agreed when the player was just 17.
Napoli have made Rasmus Hojlund’s loan permanent for £38.1 million after he helped them qualify for the Champions League. Juventus have also triggered a permanent deal for Lois Openda, despite a relatively unsuccessful loan spell, for £35.1 million due to a clause in their agreement with RB Leipzig. Other notable moves include Victor Munoz joining Liverpool from Osasuna for £34.5 million, and Rodrigo Zalazar moving from Braga to Sporting CP for £26 million, setting a new record for the most expensive transfer between two Portuguese clubs.
These early moves indicate a busy summer transfer window, with clubs across Europe investing heavily in their squads as they prepare for the upcoming season. The window remains open until September 1, and further significant transfers are expected.
