Milan are poised to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, pending Champions League qualification, according to reports in Italy. The 31-year-old has reportedly agreed to a three-year contract with the Rossoneri, worth €5 million per year.
The potential arrival of Goretzka is contingent on Milan securing a place in next season’s Champions League, a condition that aligns with the club’s ambitions to attract top talent. The club believes a midfield featuring Adrien Rabiot, Luka Modrić, and Goretzka would create one of the most formidable midfields in Serie A. Discussions between Goretzka and Milan have been ongoing for weeks, awaiting confirmation of their European status.
Goretzka has extensive experience in the Champions League, having featured in 73 matches with 6 goals and 9 assists, culminating in a title win with Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 season. He also boasts seven Bundesliga titles and numerous other domestic and international trophies. Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri reportedly requested players with personality and international experience, and Goretzka fits that profile.
Alongside the pursuit of Goretzka, Milan are also working to retain Luka Modrić. The Croatian midfielder’s contract includes an automatic one-year extension clause, which the club intends to activate with the player’s consent. Modrić, a six-time Champions League winner, has expressed a desire to remain at Milan, particularly if Allegri remains as manager. He has played 2,788 minutes in Serie A this season, demonstrating continued fitness and leadership. Modrić has a strong connection to the club, having admired their European successes during his youth, and is keen to conclude his career with the Rossoneri.
Milan are also planning further additions to their squad in defense and attack, recognizing the need for a larger and more balanced roster to compete on multiple fronts. The financial resources for these acquisitions will largely depend on the revenue generated from Champions League participation.
