Dani Parejo will leave Villarreal at the conclusion of the current La Liga season, the club announced on Thursday. The 37-year-old midfielder’s final appearance for the Yellow Submarine will be against Atlético Madrid on Sunday at La Cerámica. Parejo arrived at Villarreal in 2020 from Valencia and has since made 269 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals.
His time at Villarreal has been marked by significant success, most notably winning the Europa League in 2021. He also featured in two Champions League campaigns with the club, solidifying his status as a key figure in their recent European ventures. Parejo’s departure represents a loss of experience and leadership for Villarreal, currently sitting third in La Liga.
Prior to joining Villarreal, Parejo spent three seasons with Valencia, becoming a prominent player and captain for Los Che. He initially progressed through the Real Madrid academy but did not establish himself in the first team, spending the 2008-2009 season on loan at Queens Park Rangers. He then moved to Getafe for two seasons before returning to the Valencia area.
The Spaniard has earned four international caps for Spain, all between 2018 and 2019, demonstrating his recognition at the national level. While Villarreal has not disclosed details regarding his future plans, his contract is set to expire this summer, opening the possibility of a move to another club or even retirement. His exit will prompt Villarreal to seek midfield reinforcements ahead of next season as they look to maintain their position among Spain’s elite.
