Mason Greenwood is nearing a transfer to AS Roma, according to reports from Corriere dello Sport. The England international has reportedly reached an agreement with the Italian club, with his time at Marseille drawing to a close as he has begun to make arrangements to leave his accommodation in Aix-en-Provence.
The move comes as Marseille are unable to offer Greenwood Champions League football next season, a competition Roma will participate in. This factor is believed to be a significant draw for the 24-year-old winger, who was a key player for Marseille during the recent campaign.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly keen to build his team around Greenwood, identifying him as a priority signing for the upcoming season. However, the transfer is complicated by Marseille’s financial situation and existing agreements with Manchester United. The French club are keen to maximize the fee received for Greenwood, knowing that 40% of any transfer sum will be paid to his former club, Manchester United.
Roma are expected to submit a bid of around €40 million, but Marseille are holding out for €55 million. The club are described as being careful with their finances and unwilling to sell Greenwood for a reduced fee, despite the player’s reputation having been damaged by previous allegations of attempted rape and domestic violence, charges which were later dropped. The situation presents a challenge for Roma, who will need to increase their offer to secure Greenwood’s signature.
In addition to Greenwood’s potential departure, Marseille are also considering the sale of Robinio Vaz. The club is navigating a busy transfer window as they prepare for the next season, and the sale of Greenwood could significantly impact their squad dynamics and future plans.
