Danish midfielder Albert Grønbæk has completed a permanent transfer to Hamburger SV from Stade Rennais, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday. The move sees Grønbæk join Hamburg after a successful loan spell with the German side, with the club exercising their option to buy for a fee of €5 million.
Grønbæk initially joined Rennes in the summer of 2024 from Bodø/Glimt for a reported €12 million, arriving with high expectations. However, the player ultimately failed to establish himself in the Rennes first team, and was subsequently loaned out to both Southampton and Genoa before his move to Hamburg. The transfer is being viewed as part of a wider clear-out at the Ligue 1 club.
He found more consistent playing time in Germany, becoming a regular feature in the Hamburger SV midfield during the second half of the season. His performances clearly impressed the club’s hierarchy, leading to the decision to secure his services on a permanent basis. According to Stade Rennais, the club wishes Grønbæk all the best in his future career.
The move represents a fresh start for Grønbæk, who will be hoping to build on his recent form and become a key player for Hamburg as they aim to challenge for promotion to the Bundesliga. For Rennes, the sale allows them to recoup a portion of the initial investment and continue reshaping their squad ahead of next season. This transfer is a clear indication of the club’s strategy to move on from players who haven’t met expectations.
