Leeds United midfielder Ilia Gruev has publicly stated his desire to stay at Elland Road, despite entering the final year of his current contract. The 26-year-old joined the club from Werder Bremen in August 2023 for a reported £5 million and has become a key component of Daniel Farke’s squad.
Gruev’s commitment comes as Leeds prepare for a summer of potential investment under owners 49ers Enterprises, with plans to extend Farke’s contract also reportedly advanced. While the club anticipates significant spending, potentially up to £100 million and maximizing the new Squad Cost Ratio rules, some player sales are expected to balance the books.
Despite being linked with a return to the Bundesliga, Gruev has emphasized his enjoyment of playing in the Premier League and his belief in the project at Leeds. He highlighted the club’s ambition and the positive direction under Farke, citing the planned stadium expansion as evidence of their long-term vision. He told Werder Bremen’s official website that he is pleased with the team’s consistency and comfortable position above the relegation zone after a challenging season.
Gruev has made 86 appearances for Leeds and played 1325 minutes in the Premier League this past season, earning praise for his performances, including a man-of-the-match display against Nottingham Forest. He believes the club possesses significant potential and is eager to contribute to its growth. Valued around £12 million, Gruev is hoping Leeds will initiate contract extension talks to secure his future with the club.
Leeds are expected to prioritize strengthening other areas of the squad this summer, particularly at centre-half, while remaining satisfied with their central midfield options. The club is actively scouting potential targets, including a Champions League player and a South Korean international who impressed at recent World Cup finals.
