Serhou Guirassy is increasingly unlikely to move to Saudi Arabia this summer, according to a report in Bild. The Borussia Dortmund striker had been linked with a potential transfer to the Saudi Pro League, but now appears to favour remaining in top-level European football.
Speculation surrounding Guirassy’s future has intensified in recent weeks, with Dortmund publicly stating their desire to retain the player. Sporting director Lars Ricken recently affirmed the club’s position, stating, “We have no intention of letting him leave. He has proven his value to Borussia Dortmund impressively over the last two seasons.” Despite this public stance, Guirassy’s long-term future at the club remains uncertain.
The shift away from a Saudi Arabian transfer is reportedly due to decreased investment from clubs in the league compared to previous windows. Furthermore, the later opening of the Saudi transfer window – July 22 – does not align with Guirassy’s preference for early clarity regarding his future, as European clubs are already well into their squad planning.
Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe are now considered among the leading contenders for Guirassy’s signature. The 30-year-old has been a consistent goalscorer for Dortmund since joining the club, initially on loan from Rennes in January 2023 before making the move permanent. He finished the 2023-24 Bundesliga season with 28 goals, making him the league’s second-highest scorer.
Guirassy’s current contract with Dortmund runs until 2028, giving the German club a strong negotiating position. However, his impressive form has inevitably attracted interest from other European clubs seeking to bolster their attacking options. A move to the Premier League with Aston Villa would present a new challenge for the Guinean international, while Fenerbahçe could offer him a prominent role in a competitive Turkish Süper Lig.
Should Guirassy depart, Dortmund will likely seek a replacement capable of replicating his goalscoring output. His potential transfer could free up funds for other signings as Edin Terzić looks to build upon Dortmund’s recent successes, including reaching the Champions League final.
