Borussia Dortmund director Hans-Joachim Watzke anticipates Erling Haaland will eventually play for Real Madrid, according to reports. Watzke stated his conviction that Haaland will become a Real Madrid player in the coming years, speaking on Saturday.
Haaland departed Dortmund for Manchester City in the summer of 2022, completing a £51.2 million move. The Norway international has enjoyed a prolific goalscoring record at the Etihad Stadium, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in his debut season and playing a key role in City’s treble-winning campaign. He finished the 2023-24 season with 36 goals in all competitions despite injury setbacks.
Despite his success in Manchester, speculation regarding a potential move to Real Madrid has persisted, fuelled by the Spanish club’s long-standing interest in acquiring top talent. Real Madrid are consistently linked with the biggest names in football, and Haaland represents a player who could significantly bolster their attacking options. The club recently secured the Champions League title, reinforcing their position as one of Europe’s elite.
Watzke’s comments suggest that while Haaland is currently at Manchester City, a future transfer to the Santiago Bernabéu remains a distinct possibility. This could be contingent on various factors, including Haaland’s contract situation at City and Real Madrid’s willingness to meet his release clause, should one exist. The transfer would represent a significant coup for Real Madrid, adding a world-class striker to their already formidable squad. It would also mark a return to the Bundesliga for Watzke, who has overseen Haaland’s development at Dortmund.
