Samir Handanovic has ended his 14-year association with Inter, the club have confirmed. The Slovenian goalkeeper’s departure comes after eleven seasons as a player, one year as a scout, and two years coaching the club’s Under 17 side. Handanovic announced his exit via a post on Instagram, expressing gratitude for his time with the Nerazzurri.
Handanovic joined Inter in 2012, initially on loan from Udinese, and quickly established himself as a key figure between the posts. He went on to make over 300 appearances for the club, becoming a fan favourite for his shot-stopping ability and leadership qualities. During his time in Milan, he captained the side for several seasons and experienced a resurgence under manager Simone Inzaghi, sharing goalkeeping duties with Alessandro Bastoni in the 2022-23 campaign.
The veteran goalkeeper’s role had gradually diminished in recent seasons with the arrival of younger goalkeepers, leading to his transition into a coaching position with the youth setup. He oversaw the development of young talents for the past two years, demonstrating a commitment to the club beyond his playing days. Handanovic’s statement highlighted his affection for Inter, describing it as “more than a team: it was a home, a place of growth, of challenges, of emotions and of people who have left their mark on my journey.”
While Handanovic’s future plans remain unconfirmed, his departure marks the end of an era for Inter. The club are currently assessing options to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, with Andre Onana currently the established number one. Handanovic’s experience and dedication will be missed, but his legacy as a club icon is secure. Inter will now look to build on their recent successes, with Handanovic’s contribution having been a significant part of that story.
