Rasmus Højlund will continue his career with Napoli after the Serie A club activated their purchase option, acquiring the Danish forward from Manchester United for a fee of €45 million. The move brings an end to Højlund’s loan spell with the Italian side, transforming it into a permanent transfer. While the length of the new contract has not been disclosed, the deal signifies a long-term commitment from both player and club.
Højlund initially joined Napoli on loan from Manchester United, quickly becoming a key player under manager Antonio Conte. United had originally signed the 23-year-old from Atalanta in 2023 for a reported £80 million, but he struggled to consistently establish himself in the Premier League. His time in Naples proved more fruitful, with the forward contributing 16 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.
The forward’s opportunity for regular first-team football increased following an injury to Romelu Lukaku in March, allowing him to cement his place in the starting eleven. Højlund was among the most frequently used players by Conte during the season, and played a crucial role in Napoli securing second place in Serie A, guaranteeing Champions League football for the upcoming season. He also helped the club win the Supercoppa Italiana.
Napoli’s decision to make the transfer permanent suggests they are building a team capable of challenging for Serie A’s top honors. The acquisition of Højlund represents a significant investment for Aurelio de Laurentiis, the club’s president, and demonstrates their ambition to compete at the highest level. For Manchester United, the sale allows them to recoup a substantial portion of the fee they initially paid for the player, and potentially free up funds for other transfer targets. The move provides Højlund with a stable platform to further develop his game and establish himself as a leading striker in European football.
