Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has discussed the departure of Thomas Müller from the club, and contrasted his personality with that of Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, in an interview with DAZN. The comments came ahead of Bayern’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
Hoeness suggested that Müller became more of a spokesperson than a consistent performer towards the end of his time in Bavaria. He stated that Müller “talked more than he played football” and that the forward was “very skillfully able to sell himself, even when he was on the bench.” Despite this assessment, Hoeness clarified he holds no ill will towards Müller.
The 74-year-old then drew a distinction between Müller and Olise, highlighting the Frenchman’s more reserved nature. Hoeness described Olise as “rather introverted, who focuses strongly on his profession and does not have a great desire to constantly express himself on the Internet or on social media.” This contrasts sharply with Müller’s more outspoken personality.
Müller joined Vancouver Whitecaps in a permanent transfer after a long and decorated career with Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals and provided 276 assists in 756 appearances. He remains a hugely popular figure at the Allianz Arena, and Hoeness hinted at a potential future role for him within the club’s management structure. The suggestion of a directorial position for Müller signals the club’s continued respect for his contribution.
Olise, currently at Crystal Palace, has emerged as a highly sought-after talent in the Premier League, attracting interest from several top clubs. Hoeness’s praise for his focus and dedication could be seen as a subtle endorsement, potentially increasing his market value and appeal to potential suitors. This comparison suggests Bayern may be looking for players with a similar work ethic and dedication to Olise as they rebuild their squad.
