TSG Hoffenheim have seen an initial offer for Werder Bremen midfielder Jens Stage rejected, according to comments made by Werder chairman Klaus Filbry to Kicker. The bid, reported to be around €10 million, was deemed insufficient by Bremen officials.
Filbry confirmed Hoffenheim’s approach but stressed that the offer did not reflect Stage’s market value. He also highlighted that the player is currently under a long-term contract with Werder, which does not expire until 2028, strengthening Bremen’s position in negotiations. “First and foremost, Jens is under a long-term contract with us,” Filbry stated. “It is true that Hoffenheim made an offer, but it was not in line with market value and is therefore not something we need to engage with further.”
Werder Bremen recently bolstered their finances with the sale of Mio Backhaus to SC Freiburg for a reported €15 million, reducing the immediate need to accept offers for key players. Filbry acknowledged the financial realities facing many Bundesliga clubs, stating that most rely on transfer income, but emphasized Bremen’s comparatively strong position. “There are now hardly any clubs in the Bundesliga that are not dependent on transfer income,” he said. “However, we are generally in a strong position and don't have to approve every transfer.”
Hoffenheim are reportedly seeking a replacement for Grischa Prömel, who is set to join VfB Stuttgart. Stage has been identified as their primary target to fill that void. The 26-year-old Dane joined Werder Bremen in January 2023 from FC Copenhagen and quickly established himself as a key component in the midfield, making 32 appearances across all competitions last season. He contributed significantly to Bremen’s successful fight against relegation, providing both defensive stability and creative passing.
It remains unclear whether Hoffenheim will submit an improved bid for Stage. Bremen’s firm stance suggests a significantly higher offer would be required to tempt them into selling a player they consider vital to their squad. A second offer from Hoffenheim could test Bremen’s resolve, potentially leading to a drawn-out negotiation during the transfer window.
