Felipe Chávez is expected to return to Bayern Munich at the end of his loan spell with 1. FC Köln, with the Bundesliga club electing not to trigger their purchase option. The news was reported by Sky Germany on Friday, bringing an end to the 19-year-old midfielder’s six-month stint in Cologne.
Chávez joined Köln in January during the winter transfer window, initially hoping to gain more regular first-team experience. However, the Peru international found opportunities limited under coach Timo Schultz, making only seven appearances in the Bundesliga and accumulating a total of 96 minutes on the pitch. His appearances were largely confined to brief cameos as he struggled to break into the starting eleven.
The midfielder signed for Bayern Munich in January 2023 from Peruvian side Academia Cantolao, initially joining the Bavarian club’s reserve team. He quickly impressed, making several appearances for the first team in pre-season and earning a spot on the bench in a few Bundesliga matches before the winter break. The loan move to Köln was intended to provide him with consistent competitive football, but that did not materialize as planned.
Chávez now returns to the Allianz Arena with one year remaining on his contract. Bayern will likely assess his development during pre-season, and a decision will be made regarding his future role within the squad. It remains to be seen whether he will be integrated into the first-team setup or remain with the reserves, or if another loan move will be considered. Köln, meanwhile, will continue to search for midfield reinforcements as they plan for the upcoming season.
This decision by Köln reflects their current squad dynamics and potentially their assessment of Chávez’s immediate impact. The club is currently focused on strengthening other areas of the team, and activating the purchase option for a player who has not consistently featured in their plans was deemed unnecessary. The move allows Bayern to reassess Chávez’s progress and determine the best path for his continued development.
