Hossam Hassan will remain as the manager of the Egypt national team after the Egyptian Football Federation approved a contract extension, the federation announced on Tuesday.
The decision comes despite Egypt’s recent elimination from the World Cup by Argentina in the round of 16, a match that ended 3-2.
Federation president Hany Abo Rida stated that the extension is intended to allow for the continuation of the national team’s current project and to build upon recent achievements in Egyptian football. Formal administrative procedures will be completed at the next board meeting following the team’s return to Cairo.
Egypt reached the round of 16 for the first time in their history at the current World Cup, finishing second in Group G behind Belgium. They also secured their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating New Zealand 3-1 during the group stage. Hassan took charge of the national team in February 2024.
Under Hassan’s leadership, Egypt has also qualified for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup. They reached the semi-finals of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament, demonstrating significant progress for the national side. These qualifications and the team’s performance at the World Cup ultimately led to the federation offering Hassan a new contract, despite the defeat against Argentina. The extension ensures continuity as Egypt prepares for future international competitions and aims to further develop its footballing program.
