Former France captain Hugo Lloris is reportedly open to a sensational return to international football for this summer's World Cup, according to L'Équipe. The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who retired from the national team in 2023, would be willing to accept a role as third-choice behind Mike Maignan and Brice Samba for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where he currently plays his club football for Los Angeles FC.
L'Équipe reports that a source close to the player indicated Lloris would not campaign for a place, but would not turn down a call-up from manager Didier Deschamps. The source stressed that Lloris, out of "decency and respect for the goalkeepers in place," does not wish to be seen as someone stealing a spot. The potential opening arises from the situation of current third-choice Lucas Chevalier, who has not played for Paris Saint-Germain since 23 January after being overtaken by Matvey Safonov.
The report suggests Deschamps' stance on the idea is currently that "it is not a current issue," leaving the possibility open but uncertain. Deschamps is set to leave his role after the tournament, making this his final competition in charge. Other potential candidates for the third goalkeeper role include Robin Risser of Lens and Jean Butez of Antwerp, neither of whom have senior caps.
Lloris ended his international career in December 2023 after a record 145 appearances for France, having captained the side to victory in the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League. His club move to MLS with LAFC last winter was seen as the final chapter of his playing career, allowing him to wind down in a less demanding league.
The logistical convenience of the World Cup being held in North America, where Lloris is already based, adds a practical layer to the speculation. His vast experience, including a World Cup final appearance as recently as 2022, could be viewed as a valuable stabilizing presence in a squad dressing room during a major tournament.
For Deschamps, the calculation would balance the proven leadership and tournament knowledge of Lloris against the benefit of developing a younger goalkeeper for future cycles. The decision will also depend on Chevalier's playing prospects at PSG between now and the end of the season. If Lloris were to secure a surprise recall, it would mark a poignant final chapter to one of France's most decorated international careers.
