Hull City have expressed interest in signing SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, according to a report in Sport Bild. The newly-promoted Premier League club have enquired about the availability of the 24-year-old, who is expected to leave the Bundesliga side this summer.
Atubolu’s potential move to Hull comes after previous links with Newcastle United failed to materialize. Newcastle ultimately signed Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims, removing them from the race for the German goalkeeper. Freiburg have already secured a replacement in Mio Backhaus, who arrived from Werder Bremen, further indicating the club’s willingness to part ways with Atubolu.
Atubolu established himself as Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper over the past two seasons, making 63 appearances across all competitions. He played a key role in Freiburg’s qualification for the Europa League in the 2022-23 season, and continued to be a regular starter in the Bundesliga last term. However, with Backhaus’ arrival, Atubolu’s future at the club appears uncertain.
Freiburg currently value Atubolu at approximately €25 million, and the player has one year remaining on his current contract. This timeframe potentially puts Freiburg in a position where they may be willing to negotiate a transfer fee to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. Hull City’s interest suggests they are seeking a proven goalkeeper as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
Should Atubolu complete a move to Hull, he would become the club’s key signing ahead of the new season, addressing a critical position as they look to establish themselves in the top flight. The transfer would also provide Atubolu with the opportunity to experience the Premier League, a competition he has yet to feature in during his professional career.
