Bayern Munich produce historic comeback to defeat Mainz from three goals down
Bayern Munich produced a stunning second-half comeback to overturn a 3-0 half-time deficit and secure a 4-3 victory away at Mainz on Saturday. The newly-crowned Bundesliga champions, who had made eight changes to their starting lineup ahead of a Champions League semi-final, staged a remarkable recovery with substitutes Michael Olise and Harry Kane playing pivotal roles.
Vincent Kompany's heavily rotated side, with Tuesday's European clash against Paris Saint-Germain in mind, were overwhelmed in the first half at the Mewa Arena. Mainz, one of the form teams in the league, took a commanding lead through Dominik Kohr, Paul Nebel, and Sheraldo Becker, capitalizing on rebounds from efforts by Nadiem Amiri. Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig endured a difficult period, with the hosts' relentless attack exposing the visitors' experimental defense, which included starting debutant Bara Sapoko Ndiaye.
The complexion of the match changed entirely after the interval following the introductions of Olise and Kane. Nicolas Jackson began the fightback, scoring his tenth goal for the club after a link-up between Olise and Konrad Laimer. Olise then took center stage, netting a spectacular long-range strike to make it 3-2, reminiscent of his goal against Real Madrid earlier this season.
The French winger was instrumental again for the 80th-minute equalizer, as his delivery into the box led to Jamal Musiala firing home from close range. The comeback was completed just three minutes later when Musiala's cross was parried by Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz directly to Kane, who tapped in from close range to complete the turnaround. According to Opta, this marks only the second time in Bayern's history they have won a Bundesliga match after trailing by three or more goals, the first instance being a 6-5 win over Bochum in 1976.
The victory, while dramatic, comes with Bayern's focus firmly on their upcoming European fixture. The scale of the comeback, however, underscores the squad depth available to Kompany and provides a significant morale boost ahead of the crucial second leg against PSG. For Mainz, the defeat represents a devastating collapse, having missed a prime opportunity to defeat the champions for the fifth time in six meetings at home.
