Manchester City are increasingly optimistic about signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, even though the player’s preference remains a return to former club AC Milan, according to TEAMtalk. Representatives for the 26-year-old have been evaluating potential destinations, and City have presented a compelling project to Tonali and his camp.
Tonali joined Newcastle last year and became a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield, contributing to their Champions League qualification. However, the possibility of a move back to Italy has been a consistent theme throughout the summer transfer window, with Milan identified as his preferred destination. Several clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, were initially informed of this preference and subsequently cooled their interest.
Despite Milan being Tonali’s desired outcome, City have continued to pursue the Italian international, impressing his representatives with a detailed long-term vision for the player, a clear role within the squad, and comprehensive support for his family. These discussions have kept City firmly in contention, even as Milan’s ability to finance a deal remains uncertain. The Rossoneri have recently appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach but are still without a sporting director, creating ambiguity around their transfer strategy.
Newcastle are reportedly demanding over £100 million for Tonali, a figure that has not deterred Manchester City. The Premier League champions are preparing a British-record deal for Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, but this pursuit is separate from their interest in Tonali, with City viewing both players as potential additions to a reshaped midfield. Recent departures, such as Bernardo Silva, and potential exits for Rodri and Nico Gonzalez, could create further space in the squad.
City believe they can offer Tonali a highly attractive sporting project and are well-positioned to secure his signature if his move back to Serie A falls through. While Milan remains his top choice and Newcastle insist he is not for sale, Manchester City are growing in confidence that they can convince Tonali to join the Etihad.
