Manchester City are in advanced discussions with Nottingham Forest over a potential club-record transfer for midfielder Elliot Anderson, with negotiations focusing on the structure of the payment. The 23-year-old has reportedly made his desire to join the Premier League runners-up clear, and personal terms have already been broadly agreed.
Anderson has flourished since joining Forest from Newcastle United, establishing himself as a key player in the East Midlands. While Manchester United retain an interest in the England international, their focus has reportedly shifted to alternative midfield targets. City are currently considered the frontrunners for his signature.
Negotiations are believed to be centered around a total package exceeding £100 million, which would surpass the £100 million Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021. Nottingham Forest are seeking £105 million for Anderson, a fee comparable to the amount Arsenal paid for Declan Rice in 2023. The club are determined to maximise the return on one of their prized assets and are holding firm on their valuation.
According to sources, the primary sticking point remains the payment structure. Manchester City have offered an initial £80 million, but Forest are pushing for a deal incorporating significant add-ons and instalments, mirroring the arrangement of the Rice transfer. Forest officials are demonstrating a strengthened financial position and ambition for sustainable growth, refusing to compromise on their asking price.
Anderson is eager to finalize the move before England’s opening match of the World Cup on June 17th. The player is reportedly excited by the project at the Etihad Stadium, even following the confirmation of Pep Guardiola’s departure as manager. Should negotiations with City collapse, Manchester United could re-enter the race, but doing so could potentially increase the transfer fee. The transfer would represent a significant investment in young British talent for Manchester City, while providing Forest with funds to strengthen their squad.
