Inter Milan plan defensive overhaul with Vicario and Solet targeted
Inter Milan are planning a significant defensive rebuild this summer, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defenders Oumar Solet and Joel Ordoñez among the primary targets, according to reports in Italy. The club is preparing for the departures of several veteran defenders whose contracts are expiring, marking the end of an era for a backline that has been fundamental to their recent success.
Francesco Acerbi, 38, and Matteo Darmian, 36, are both expected to leave the club upon the expiry of their deals this summer. Stefan De Vrij, 34, is also likely to depart, creating three vacancies in central defence. In goal, Yann Sommer’s tenure as first choice is set to conclude, with the 37-year-old Swiss international having made errors deemed costly this season.
The club has reportedly identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Italian international goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as the definitive successor to Sommer. A deal for Vicario has been a long-standing ambition for Inter’s management. There is a possibility Sommer could remain for a further season as a backup, but he has yet to make a final decision on that proposal.
To replenish the defensive line, Inter are assessing several younger options. Udinese’s French centre-back Oumar Solet, 25, is a key target, with the club prepared to spend over €15 million provided his ongoing legal issues in Italy are resolved. Another candidate is Bruges’ Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordoñez, 20, who is valued between €20-25 million and is admired for his physicality and European experience.
A more economical option is Sassuolo’s Bosnian left-footer Tarik Muharemovic, 23, who offers tactical versatility. His potential arrival is also linked to the ongoing speculation surrounding Alessandro Bastoni’s future. Barcelona are maintaining significant interest in Bastoni, with Inter likely to demand a fee in the region of €70 million for their star defender, a sale that would fundamentally reshape their rebuilding plans.
Amid this potential upheaval, Inter are also working to secure the future of Carlos Augusto. The Brazilian’s contract expires in 2028, and he is currently viewed as the only direct deputy for Bastoni, making his renewal a priority for the club's sporting directors.
