Calhanoglu reveals Juventus interest before choosing Inter
Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has revealed he turned down an approach from Juventus before making his controversial 2021 switch from AC Milan to their city rivals. The Turkey captain disclosed the details in a wide-ranging interview with Turkish channel Kafa Sports, explaining his decision-making process during that pivotal transfer window.
Calhanoglu stated that after AC Milan failed to present a formal contract renewal offer, he had multiple options. According to the player, both Barcelona and Juventus were interested in signing him before Inter's decisive move. He described then-Inter manager Simone Inzaghi's relentless pursuit, with the coach calling him constantly during the European Championship to express his desire to bring him to the club.
The 30-year-old admitted the weight of moving directly between the Milanese rivals made the decision difficult. He ultimately chose Inter after a night of reflection advised by his agent, a choice he made independently before informing his family. Calhanoglu said he felt a need to prove himself to the new club and its supporters, efforts he believes have been rewarded with the affection of the Inter fanbase.
In the same interview, Calhanoglu reflected on his positional change at Inter, moving into a deeper playmaking role following the departure of Marcelo Brozovic. He explained that Inzaghi proposed the idea, which he accepted as a new challenge, and that he now enjoys the mix of defensive and offensive duties it entails. He also compared Inzaghi to his current assistant coach, Cristian Chivu, noting their different philosophies, with Chivu more willing to give opportunities to younger players.
Looking at the future of Turkish football, Calhanoglu singled out Juventus's Kenan Yildiz and Real Madrid's Arda Guler as the talents most likely to reach or surpass his level, praising their enormous potential. The Inter midfielder also discussed the pride of his Ballon d'Or nomination and the emotional journey of becoming captain of the Turkish national team.
