Inter Milan are set to exercise their repurchase option for Aleksandar Stankovic, bringing the midfielder back to the club for a reported €23 million, according to reports in Italy. The move comes after a successful two-year period for Stankovic with both FC Lucerne and Club Brugge, where he has established himself as a regular starter.
Stankovic, the son of former Inter star Dejan Stankovic, has impressed in Belgium, playing a key role in Club Brugge’s league title win this season. He contributed nine goals and five assists, and featured prominently in their Champions League campaign. Former Brugge coach Nicky Hayen, now at Genk, and Ivan Leko both utilized Stankovic’s attacking qualities and shooting ability, positioning him in a role similar to that of Nicolò Barella. He ranked fifth in the league for chances created, seventh for passes completed per game, and third for touches in the opposition area.
Inter initially allowed Stankovic to depart to gain regular playing time, and now face a decision regarding his long-term future at the San Siro. While valued at approximately €40 million, the club may consider a sale to generate a significant profit. The versatility of Stankovic, capable of playing as either a regista or a mezzala, is appealing, and he has drawn interest from clubs in the Premier League and Bundesliga.
Despite his strong performances, Stankovic may find his path to the starting eleven blocked by established players like Hakan Calhanoglu and Barella. The player himself has expressed a lifelong affinity for Inter, stating that he and his brother grew up with the club’s colours, and that it feels like a second home. However, he also prioritizes regular playing time, and Inter must weigh the potential for a lucrative sale against the possibility of integrating a promising young talent into their squad. A decision on whether Stankovic will remain at Inter or move elsewhere is expected this summer.
