Inter Milan are prioritizing a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah as they reshape their backline following the departures of Francesco Acerbi and Stefan De Vrij, according to reports from Italy. The Nerazzurri have already secured the signing of goalkeeper Ivan Provedel and Khalaili, addressing immediate needs, but strengthening the central defense is now a key focus.
Inter’s interest in Chalobah is not new, with the player reportedly favouring a move to the San Siro. However, Chelsea are currently holding firm on a €40 million valuation, presenting a challenge to the Italian club. Inter are hoping the player’s desire to join, demonstrated by rejecting other offers from clubs like Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Fulham, will facilitate negotiations. The Blues had considered including Chalobah in a deal to sign Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg, but the defender has made it clear his preference is to join Inter. Como also previously expressed interest but withdrew their offers after they were deemed insufficient.
Chalobah, 27, has been a consistent performer for Chelsea, though not always a guaranteed starter. He has made over 100 appearances for the club since joining from Fulham in 2018. Inter manager Simone Inzaghi is seeking a mature and experienced central defender capable of immediately contributing in both Serie A and the Champions League. The club are also exploring alternative options, including free agent David Alaba, 34, and Jhon Lucumi of Bologna, who has a release clause of €28 million valid until July 15th. Juventus are also monitoring Lucumi’s situation.
The successful acquisition of Khalaili has demonstrated Inter’s ability to convince players to choose the club, even against competition from other suitors. While no official bid has been submitted for Chalobah yet, contacts with his representatives are ongoing, and the situation is expected to accelerate in the coming days. Inter’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements signals their ambition to maintain a strong squad capable of competing on multiple fronts next season.
