Inter Milan’s plans to sign Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario are becoming increasingly complex due to Tottenham’s fight to remain in the Premier League, according to reports in Italy. The Nerazzurri have identified the Italian international as a potential replacement for Yann Sommer, whose contract expires at the end of June.
Tottenham, currently managed by Roberto De Zerbi, are in a precarious position heading into the final day of the season. They sit on 38 points, just two ahead of West Ham United, and face Everton at home. West Ham play Leeds United. De Zerbi’s success in securing Premier League survival for Tottenham will directly impact Inter’s ability to negotiate a deal for Vicario.
Vicario joined Tottenham in 2023 for a reported €20 million and has established himself as a key player despite a challenging season for the club. He was a part of the Europa League winning squad last year, playing ten matches including the final against Manchester United. Should Tottenham remain in the Premier League, negotiating with them will become significantly more difficult and expensive, with his current valuation estimated around €20 million.
Inter are also considering an internal solution to their goalkeeping needs. Josep Martinez, who arrived from Genoa in 2022 for approximately €15 million, has served as the understudy to Sommer. He has proven himself in cup competitions, including a crucial performance in the recent Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina, where he made a decisive save. Inter believe Martinez is ready to step into the starting role, having already demonstrated his understanding of the club’s environment and the coaching staff’s expectations. Promoting Martinez would necessitate the acquisition of a new backup goalkeeper.
The club are aware that Martinez is eager for more playing time, and his familiarity with the club and assistant coach Cristian Chivu is seen as a significant advantage. He has played 20 matches for Inter since 2024, consistently proving his reliability when called upon.
