Andoni Iraola is poised to become the new Liverpool manager, with the club accelerating talks to finalize his appointment before the start of the World Cup on June 11. This follows the surprising sacking of Arne Slot on Saturday after an end-of-season review conducted by Fenway Sports Group chiefs, including chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes.
Hughes’ existing relationship with Iraola, having previously brought the Basque manager to Bournemouth in 2023, is expected to smooth the transition. However, Iraola’s arrival immediately presents a significant goalkeeping dilemma, with Alisson Becker reportedly seeking an exit from Anfield. According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Alisson intends to inform the new coach that he believes his time at Liverpool is over.
Alisson has reportedly reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Juventus over a three-year contract, with an option for a further year. While Liverpool have so far ‘blocked’ Alisson’s departure, that stance could shift depending on discussions with Iraola and Hughes. The potential arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, or a push for another new goalkeeper, could pave the way for Alisson to join the Italian side.
Liverpool have identified Brighton & Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen as a potential replacement for Alisson, as reported on May 15. The club is already preparing for the departures of several key players, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson this summer, and losing Alisson would further deplete experience and leadership within the squad. Ibrahima Konate has also confirmed he will leave on a free transfer following stalled contract negotiations. Despite this, Alisson is determined to secure a move where he is guaranteed a starting role, a promise Juventus are reportedly willing to make.
