Bayer Leverkusen are in advanced discussions with Oliver Glasner as they search for a new manager, though their pursuit has been complicated by Andoni Iraola’s impending move to Liverpool, according to TEAMtalk. The developments follow a disappointing season for Leverkusen, where they failed to secure Champions League qualification and fell short in the Bundesliga title race, leading to the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and the expected departure of Kasper Hjulmand.
Glasner, who recently guided Crystal Palace to Conference League glory, is considered the leading contender for the Leverkusen position. The Austrian manager previously managed Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, giving him familiarity with the demands of German football. Discussions between Glasner and Leverkusen officials have taken place in recent days as the club aims to finalize their managerial appointment quickly.
Iraola, formerly of Bournemouth, had also been a strong candidate for Leverkusen but has now prioritized a return to the Premier League with Liverpool. The Basque coach previously missed out on the Chelsea job, which ultimately went to Xabi Alonso, and had reportedly cooled talks with AC Milan before Liverpool emerged as a viable option. Crystal Palace had also identified Iraola as a potential replacement for Glasner and submitted an offer, but it is expected to be rejected as he leans towards joining Liverpool.
The swift managerial changes reflect a period of upheaval at several clubs. Liverpool’s decision to pursue Iraola came after a recent review, while Leverkusen are determined to reset after a challenging season. The appointment of Iraola at Liverpool could signal a shift in tactical approach, while Glasner’s potential arrival at Leverkusen aims to restore the club’s competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions.
