Manchester United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton as they assess defensive options ahead of the new season, according to reports in Germany. The potential transfer comes with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Matthijs de Ligt, who underwent surgery on a back problem and will miss the World Cup.
De Ligt’s injury has prompted United to explore potential centre-back signings, though it is not currently their top priority in the transfer market. Other players linked with a move to Old Trafford include David Affengruber of Elche and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo, though the latter recently signed a new contract. Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong is also on the club’s radar, but a decision on his future is contingent on the arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager at Stamford Bridge.
Anton joined Dortmund from Stuttgart in 2024 and has established himself as a key figure in the team, becoming a “secret” and “silent” leader, with expectations he will become a third-choice captain. Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga last season, conceding fewer goals than champions Bayern Munich, with Anton playing a significant role in their defensive solidity. He started 32 Bundesliga matches, missing only two games due to a thigh injury.
Dortmund are reluctant to sell the 29-year-old, but the opportunity to play in the Premier League is expected to appeal to Anton. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is currently €19.6 million, making him a potentially affordable option. Data analytics firm SciSports suggests Anton is currently a more effective player than United’s existing centre-backs, despite Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and De Ligt possessing higher potential. His experience and immediate impact could prove valuable as United prepare for their return to the Champions League.
Dortmund’s season, while statistically successful, was marked by a defensively-minded approach under Niko Kovac, a style that drew criticism for its lack of attacking flair. Anton’s consistent performances were a key component of their defensive success, earning him praise from Kovac as a “consummate professional”.
