Andoni Iraola, formerly of Bournemouth, is set to become the new manager of Liverpool following the departure of Arne Slot, according to reports from Italy. The move comes after Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, securing a Champions League spot, but ultimately falling short of expectations.
Slot had initially been confirmed in his position but a change of heart from the Liverpool ownership led to a lengthy and appreciative farewell statement being released. Iraola, who finished sixth with Bournemouth, one position behind Liverpool, has been identified as the ideal replacement. He had previously been a target for AC Milan, who were seeking a successor to their own outgoing manager.
Iraola had expressed a desire to remain in England, anticipating a more ambitious offer than his previous role at Crystal Palace. Liverpool’s decision to pursue him represents a significant opportunity for the Spanish coach to lead a club with Champions League ambitions. The circumstances surrounding Slot’s departure were described as somewhat surprising, given his initial confirmation, and indicative of a fractured relationship with the club.
Slot boasts a respectable managerial record, having won the Dutch Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in 2022-23, as well as the Dutch Cup in 2023-24. He made the jump to the Premier League in 2024-25, but ultimately failed to deliver the expected results. Meanwhile, AC Milan are reportedly continuing their search for a new manager, with Oliver Glasner currently leading the race and scheduled to meet with the club on Tuesday. The connection between AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale and Fenway Sports Group, the ownership of Liverpool, has also been noted, though it is not yet clear if this will impact their managerial search. Rafaela Pimenta, an agent with ties to both clubs, may also play a role in potential negotiations.
This appointment signals a shift in direction for Liverpool, as they look to rebuild after a disappointing season. Iraola’s arrival could potentially invigorate the squad and restore their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.
