Italy’s Under-17 team secured the European Championship title after defeating Belgium in a penalty shootout, a victory celebrated by Juventus as two of their academy prospects played key roles in the triumph: Emanuele Giaretta and Thomas Corigliano. The club acknowledged the success of the two players via their social media channels, reaffirming their commitment to developing youth talent.
Goalkeeper Emanuele Giaretta, born in 2009, has been consistently impressing and signed his first professional contract with Juventus in February, a reward for his consistent growth and high-level performances. Giaretta arrived at Juventus’ youth academy in the summer of 2023 from Cittadella and quickly established himself as a key player for his age group. He was instrumental in winning the national U16 title last season, particularly in the final against Empoli, with crucial saves throughout the campaign. The club secured his future with a contract extending to 2028, demonstrating their faith in his abilities. This was followed by a call-up to the Italy U17 squad, allowing him to test himself against Europe’s best young players.
Giaretta’s strengths extend beyond basic goalkeeping skills; he combines excellent reflexes with proficient ball control, increasingly important attributes for modern goalkeepers. His physical presence allows him to command his area, and he displays courage and composure when coming off his line. He cites Gianluigi Buffon and Marco Carnesecchi as role models, both iconic figures in Italian goalkeeping. Giaretta also benefits from a family connection to the sport, being the grandson of former Serie A goalkeeper Luigi Muraro, who served as his first coach and instilled in him a passion for the position.
Alongside Giaretta, Thomas Corigliano has also been garnering attention within the Juventus youth system. The attacking midfielder has been a standout performer for over a year, captivating fans and scouts with his refined technique and flair. He played a pivotal role in Juventus’ U16 Scudetto win last season, scoring crucial goals in both the semi-final against Roma and the final against Empoli. Corigliano’s performances have earned him opportunities with the Juventus Primavera squad and a place in the Italy U17 team, where he scored in the group stage and started in the final against Belgium.
Corigliano possesses exceptional dribbling skills, a keen eye for a pass, and composure in front of goal, qualities that have led to comparisons with some of Juventus’ most promising talents. He is currently mentored by former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who also acts as his agent, providing valuable guidance as he navigates the expectations that come with representing the club. The success of both players represents a positive sign for Juventus’ future.
