Feyenoord have announced that Robin van Persie has left his position as head coach of the Dutch club, effective immediately. The decision was made public by Feyenoord on Sunday, with the club stating they will begin the 2026-2027 season with a new manager, though no replacement has yet been identified.
Van Persie’s departure brings an end to his year-and-a-half tenure in charge of the Rotterdam-based side, the club where he rose to prominence as a player, scoring 46 goals in 123 appearances. He had returned to Feyenoord hoping to replicate his playing success from the managerial dugout.
This season proved challenging for Van Persie, with Feyenoord finishing second in the Eredivisie, a significant 19 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven. Their European campaign also fell short of expectations, as they were eliminated in the group stage of the Europa League. This mixed performance ultimately led to the decision by the club’s new sporting direction to seek a change in leadership.
New sporting director Davy Rigaux explained the decision, stating that an internal analysis considered the evolution of the team’s playing style and a decline in points gained, both domestically and in Europe. “The conclusion was that it was better to start next season with a new coach,” Rigaux said. The club thanked Van Persie for his contributions during his time as head coach.
Van Persie’s managerial career began with a stint at Go Ahead Eagles, before returning to his former club. While his time at Feyenoord didn’t yield the desired results, his legacy as a player for the club remains secure. The search for a new manager will now begin, as Feyenoord look to challenge for the Eredivisie title and improve their European performances next season.
