Werder Bremen are poised to sign Fortuna Düsseldorf striker Cedric Itten on a free transfer this summer, according to Sky Germany. A verbal agreement in principle is already in place with the 29-year-old Swiss international, with a medical pending to finalize the move.
Itten’s contract with Düsseldorf expires this month, allowing Bremen to secure his services without a transfer fee. The forward enjoyed a productive season despite his club’s relegation to the 3. Liga, scoring 14 goals in all competitions. This form has attracted attention from other clubs, but Bremen appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Schalke 04, recently promoted to the Bundesliga, have also expressed interest in Itten, while Karlsruhe SC, a second-division side, could potentially submit a formal offer. However, as of now, Bremen are the clear frontrunners and the deal is expected to proceed smoothly unless a late bid emerges.
Itten began his professional career with FC Luzern in Switzerland before moving to St. Gallen in 2016. He then spent time in Germany with St. Pauli before joining Rangers in Scotland in 2020. A loan spell at Greuther Fürth preceded his move to Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2022, where he became a key player despite the team’s struggles. His goalscoring record demonstrates a consistent ability to find the net, making him an attractive prospect for Bremen.
Werder Bremen will be looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Bundesliga season. The addition of Itten provides a proven goalscorer and adds depth to their forward line, potentially improving their chances of establishing themselves in the top flight. Bremen narrowly avoided relegation last season and will hope Itten's goals can help secure a more comfortable finish next term.
