Bayer Leverkusen have intensified their interest in Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez, making fresh contact with the Scottish club over a potential transfer. The German side are looking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season, and Fernandez has emerged as a key target.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international joined Rangers last summer from Peterborough United and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Ibrox side. Fernandez’s commanding presence, aerial ability, and composure have earned him recognition, including a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.
Leverkusen face competition for Fernandez’s signature, with Borussia Dortmund reportedly long-term admirers of the player. Several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham United, and Everton, have also been monitoring his progress, alongside interest from Club Brugge. However, Leverkusen are currently well-positioned to make a formal offer.
Rangers are prepared for significant interest in Fernandez and are seeking a substantial fee for their star defender, reportedly holding out for at least £25 million, with some sources suggesting a potential valuation closer to £30-35 million depending on add-ons. This would represent a significant profit on the £3.5 million initially paid to Peterborough, although the English club’s sell-on clause will impact the final sum received.
Fernandez recently made his debut for the Nigerian national team and has remained focused on his commitments to Rangers despite ongoing transfer speculation. However, with the summer window now open, a move to a major European league is looking increasingly likely. Negotiations are expected to progress in the coming weeks.
The potential loss of Fernandez would be a setback for Rangers, but the resulting financial windfall could provide new manager Derek McInnes with funds to strengthen the squad. Rangers recently agreed to a compensation package with Hearts for McInnes, who replaced Danny Rohl following his departure to RB Salzburg. A sale of Fernandez could further aid McInnes’s rebuilding efforts as Rangers aim to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.
Even a £25 million fee would represent a club-record sale for Rangers, reflecting the value 49ers Enterprises places on player trading.
