Chelsea are set to welcome Nicolas Jackson back to Stamford Bridge after Bayern Munich opted not to exercise their €65 million purchase option, according to multiple reports. The Senegalese striker spent the 2025-26 season on loan with the Bundesliga champions, but failed to establish himself as a consistent starter under Thomas Tuchel.
Jackson initially joined Chelsea from Villarreal in August 2023 for a reported fee of £30 million, signing a seven-year contract. While he showed flashes of potential during his first season in London, he also faced criticism for his finishing and overall impact in front of goal. The loan move to Bayern was intended to provide him with a fresh start and increased playing time, but he largely remained a squad player.
Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be a fan of Jackson’s physical attributes and work rate, and will offer him a second chance to prove his worth, according to sources close to the club. Alonso, who is expected to be officially announced as Chelsea’s new head coach in the coming days, is reportedly keen to build a squad that combines technical ability with athleticism.
The decision by Bayern not to trigger the purchase option is reportedly due to concerns over Jackson’s goalscoring record and consistency. He made 28 appearances across all competitions for the Bavarian side, scoring only four goals. Bayern are now expected to pursue other attacking options during the summer transfer window.
Jackson’s return to Chelsea presents Alonso with an interesting dilemma. The club is already well-stocked in attacking positions, and the arrival of a new manager could lead to further reinforcements. However, Jackson’s familiarity with the club and his potential could make him a valuable asset if he can rediscover his form. This move could also save Chelsea a significant amount of money, as they avoid the need to sign a new striker this summer.
