Liverpool are increasingly likely to miss out on a summer move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, with the Eagles poised to offer the 22-year-old a new contract. The news comes as Liverpool assess their midfield options following a disappointing 2025/26 season that saw them finish outside the top four and without silverware.
Liverpool’s campaign was marked by a staggering 19 losses across all competitions, highlighting a need for reinforcement in the centre of the pitch. Wharton had emerged as a key target, having impressed since joining Crystal Palace in February 2024, but recent developments suggest he will remain at Selhurst Park.
According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace are hopeful of retaining Wharton’s services after their recent UEFA Conference League victory, with the promise of Europa League football next season playing a significant role. Reporter James Savundra stated that Wharton will be “boosted” by winning another trophy for Palace and that the club wants to keep the core of its squad together.
The BBC also report that Palace are in a “strong position” to not only keep Wharton but are actively considering offering him a new contract, despite his current deal having three years remaining. Wharton recently missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad, but Palace’s European qualification is seen as a major boost in their efforts to convince him to stay.
Should Liverpool fail to secure Wharton, FSG have identified two alternative targets: Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar and Tottenham Hotspur’s Archie Gray. However, Gray’s situation is complicated by Tottenham’s Premier League survival, making a move for the England Under-21 international more difficult. Smit, despite expressing a preference for a move to Real Madrid, could be available for a fee exceeding €60 million (£52.2m). Liverpool have reportedly been tracking Smit since December 2025.
