Jérémy Jacquet will join Liverpool from Rennes in July for a fee of €63 million, having opted for the Merseyside club despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester United. The 20-year-old defender revealed he was drawn to Liverpool’s sporting project and the opportunity to learn from Virgil van Dijk, who is nearing the end of his career.
Jacquet established himself in the Rennes first team in 2025 following a loan spell with Clermont, quickly becoming one of the most promising young players in Ligue 1. Despite a shoulder injury cutting his season short in February, his performances attracted attention from several of Europe’s top clubs. He confirmed discussions with Liverpool were ongoing for a considerable period, dismissing suggestions they entered the race at the last minute.
Speaking to Ouest-France, Jacquet explained his decision, stating that Liverpool felt like the right fit despite offers from elsewhere. He highlighted the chance to train alongside Van Dijk as a significant factor, believing the veteran defender could impart invaluable knowledge. Jacquet also emphasized his focus on the sporting side of the move at this stage in his career, prioritizing football over personal considerations.
He further clarified that his agent initially suggested a stepping-stone move to a mid-table club, but Jacquet was determined to join a team with European ambitions. He felt confident in his ability to compete at the highest level and was unwilling to forgo the opportunity to join a top club. Interest from United was acknowledged, along with approaches from other unnamed clubs, but ultimately Liverpool’s proposal proved most appealing.
Jacquet’s arrival at Anfield is expected to provide long-term cover and competition in the centre-back position, potentially becoming Van Dijk’s long-term successor. The significant investment signals Liverpool’s commitment to strengthening their defense and maintaining their competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions.
