Chelsea forward Joao Pedro has reportedly agreed to a transfer to Barcelona this summer, according to Spanish publication AS. The news emerges despite Chelsea previously indicating the Brazilian would not be sold as they build under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Pedro joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion last year and has since scored 23 goals with six assists, establishing himself as a key player for the Blues. His form has attracted attention from Barcelona, who are seeking a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Recent reports suggested a move to Camp Nou was unlikely, with Chelsea designating Pedro as one of seven ‘untouchables’ – a group also including Reece James, Levi Colwill, Moises Caicedo, Josh Acheampong, Estevao Willian and Cole Palmer. However, AS claims personal terms have already been agreed with the player.
Barcelona are currently pursuing Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid as their primary target to replace Lewandowski, but have had a €100 million offer rejected. The pursuit of Alvarez has become more complicated with a reported €150 million bid from Real Madrid and interest from Arsenal, prompting Barcelona to consider Pedro as a viable alternative.
Despite the reports from Spain, Joao Pedro has seven years remaining on his current contract with Chelsea and is expected to remain at Stamford Bridge. He is anticipated to lead the line for Alonso’s side next season, potentially alongside Nicolas Jackson, who is returning from a loan spell at Bayern Munich. Chelsea are also set to welcome Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha in July, further strengthening their attacking options.
