Chelsea legend Joe Cole has publicly advocated for the club to pursue a third managerial spell for Jose Mourinho amid their ongoing search for a permanent head coach. The Blues dismissed Liam Rosenior last month and are reportedly prioritizing a manager with a proven track record as they aim to consistently compete in the Champions League under the current ownership.
Several names have been linked with the vacancy at Stamford Bridge, including Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola, and recently crowned Championship winner Frank Lampard. However, Mourinho has also emerged as a potential candidate, despite being strongly linked with a return to Real Madrid, where president Florentino Perez is reportedly keen to secure his services following a trophy-less two seasons.
Mourinho currently manages Benfica, where he has maintained a 61% win rate since joining the Portuguese club in September, and is widely expected to depart this summer. While Real Madrid appears to be his preferred destination, Cole believes Chelsea should make a strong push to bring him back to west London.
Speaking to The Sun, Cole stated that hiring Mourinho would be a “realistic” and “best” move for Chelsea, suggesting the club grant him full control over a long-term rebuild. He proposed giving Mourinho a lengthy contract and clearly communicating the plan to both players and supporters, emphasizing a period of transition and trust in the manager’s decisions.
Mourinho previously enjoyed two highly successful spells at Chelsea, winning three Premier League titles and establishing himself as arguably the club’s greatest ever manager. His tactical acumen and charismatic personality made him a fan favorite during his time at Stamford Bridge. Cole believes perceptions of Mourinho being “finished” are inaccurate, pointing to Real Madrid’s interest as evidence of his continued appeal.
A return for Mourinho would represent a significant shift in direction for Chelsea, potentially providing stability and a clear vision after a period of managerial instability. The appointment could also appease a fanbase that fondly remembers his previous successes at the club.
