Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen has informed the club of his desire to leave this summer, according to a report by the BBC. The 24-year-old is seeking more regular first-team football after limited opportunities at Stamford Bridge.
Jørgensen arrived at Chelsea from Villarreal in 2024 for a fee of €24.5 million, but has largely served as a backup to Robert Sanchez. He made 12 appearances in all competitions last season, briefly becoming the first-choice keeper under former manager Liam Rosenior, but failed to fully convince in five Premier League outings. His performances during that spell were reportedly underwhelming.
Chelsea are anticipating a period of restructuring under incoming manager Xabi Alonso, and are prepared to facilitate departures to fund a rebuild and comply with financial regulations. The club are open to Jørgensen’s exit ‘on favourable terms’, acknowledging his need for consistent playing time. Several clubs expressed interest in January, including Genoa, Besiktas, and Porto, but Chelsea rejected any mid-season approaches.
The situation is further complicated by the emergence of Mike Penders, a young goalkeeper who impressed during a loan spell at Strasbourg. Penders was previously considered a potential starter for next season before Rosenior’s dismissal, and his future role under Alonso remains uncertain. However, Chelsea rate Penders highly and view him as a long-term prospect.
Chelsea have not ruled out the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper, particularly if Jørgensen departs. Long-term target Mike Maignan remains on their radar, alongside Sunderland’s Robin Roefs. The club will likely assess their options based on Alonso’s preferences and the outcome of Jørgensen’s potential transfer. The departure of Jørgensen would open a space in the squad and potentially free up funds for further investment in the goalkeeping position.
