Juventus are exploring the possibility of signing Atlético Madrid centre-back José Maria Giménez, according to reports in Italy. The Bianconeri have enquired about the Uruguayan international’s availability as they seek to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season.
Giménez, a key player for Uruguay and a long-term target for Juventus – initially linked during Leonardo Bonucci’s departure to Milan in 2017 – has found his playing time limited at Atlético under Diego Simeone. He has made 25 appearances this season, often from the bench, with younger players Hancko and Le Normand preferred in the starting lineup. Despite this, the 28-year-old is eager to regain a prominent role and seek a new challenge.
The potential move could be contingent on the future of Gleison Bremer, who has attracted interest from other clubs. Juventus value Bremer at around €58.7 million, and a strong showing at the upcoming World Cup could increase his market value. Juventus sporting director Marco Ottolini recently scouted Giménez in person during an international friendly match between Uruguay and Algeria.
Giménez has been with Atlético Madrid since 2013, and while Simeone has consistently valued his presence, the club may be open to a sale. His current contract runs until 2028, and Atlético are reportedly seeking a fee of around €15 million for the defender. Giménez has 69 appearances in European competitions and 99 caps for Uruguay, demonstrating his vast experience at the highest level. He scored against Juventus in the Champions League in 2019, a match where Cristiano Ronaldo ultimately secured Juventus’ progression.
Juventus are prioritizing players with a winning mentality as they attempt to rebuild, having previously shown interest in players like Andy Robertson and Alisson. Giménez’s experience and leadership qualities align with this strategy, and the club believe he could provide a valuable addition to their squad.
