Dusan Vlahovic will depart Juventus when his contract expires on July 1st, 2026, after declining the club’s proposal to renegotiate his salary. The decision, confirmed following recent discussions between Juventus and the player’s representatives, means the Serbian striker will be available on a free transfer.
The news has been met with frustration from within the Juventus camp, particularly amongst supporters, who feel let down by both the decision itself and the manner in which it was reached. This sentiment is compounded by previous statements made by Vlahovic expressing commitment to the club. A resurfaced social media post from May 2022, following Juventus’ Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter, has gained renewed attention, with Vlahovic stating he was “ready to go to hell with you, if it serves to bring you back to paradise.”
Juventus are reportedly disappointed, especially given their need for strong signals both on and off the pitch as they aim to return to the Champions League. While the initial contract, which saw Vlahovic’s wages rise to €12 million per year, is viewed as an error in judgement, many believe a gesture of goodwill from the player could have aided the club during a challenging period. Vlahovic contributed significantly to Juventus’ goal tally, helping to maintain their Champions League qualification hopes until the final stages of the season.
Former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi publicly criticised Vlahovic’s decision, responding to the player’s old social media post with “The Paradise of the Europa League…”, a pointed remark suggesting Vlahovic’s actions contradict his previous words. The situation has sparked debate regarding player loyalty and financial interests in modern football, with comparisons drawn to the club’s players who remained with Juventus in Serie B following the Calciopoli scandal. Vlahovic’s departure will also mean Juventus will not receive a transfer fee for the player, further increasing the dissatisfaction of the fanbase.
The decision has provoked a mixed reaction from Juventus fans online, with some questioning Vlahovic’s character and others welcoming the prospect of his departure. The club now faces the task of finding a suitable replacement for the Serbian forward.
