Juventus are reportedly reassessing their options in goal and attack following a run of poor form and disappointing performances from key players, according to reports in TuttoSport. The club has secured just four points from their last three Serie A matches against Verona, Lecce, and Fiorentina, leaving them sixth in the league standings and jeopardizing their chances of Champions League qualification.
Manager Massimiliano Allegri’s squad is facing significant questions, particularly regarding goalkeeper Wladimiro Di Gregorio and their forward line, which includes Dušan Vlahović, Arkadiusz Milik, and recent signings Samuel David and Lois Openda. The situation has prompted reflection on past managerial wisdom, with a resurfaced quote from Antonio Conte – formerly of Tottenham – resonating within the club. Conte, when discussing the importance of key positions, referenced a comment from director of sport Pantaleo Corvino: “You can get the wife wrong, but not the goalkeeper or the striker when you build a team.”
Di Gregorio’s form has reportedly led to a change of heart within the Juventus hierarchy, after initial confidence in the player waned due to a series of errors, including costly mistakes in Champions League matches against Borussia Dortmund and in Serie A against Lazio, Como, and Verona. A particularly damaging incident occurred against Inter, where a slow reaction from Di Gregorio contributed to an own goal. These consistent errors have prompted the club to search for alternative goalkeeping options in the upcoming transfer window, though Champions League qualification remains a key factor in their ability to attract top targets.
The attacking situation is equally concerning. Vlahović’s contract is set to expire on June 30th, and while his form has been inconsistent, with periods of both promise and struggle, his future remains uncertain due to his high wage demands. David and Openda, both signed with high expectations, have largely failed to deliver, with Openda playing just five minutes in his last ten appearances despite public backing from Spalletti. The Belgian arrived with a hefty obligation to buy of over 40 million euros but has scored only two goals this season. Milik has also struggled with injuries, remaining largely absent from the squad. The club’s struggles in these key positions highlight the importance of Conte’s sentiment and the need for decisive action in the transfer market.
