Nico González’s future is becoming increasingly uncertain as the coming weeks unfold, with both Atlético Madrid and Juventus emerging as potential destinations for the Argentinian winger. González recently completed a loan spell at Atlético Madrid, but the club did not trigger the €32 million release clause due to the player failing to meet the required appearance threshold, a consequence of a season hampered by injuries.
Despite this, reports from Marca indicate that González expressed a desire to remain in Madrid, benefiting from the confidence of manager Diego Simeone and the club’s willingness to explore a renewed deal. However, the situation has reportedly become more complex with Juventus potentially re-integrating the 1998-born player into their first-team plans for the upcoming season, complicating any potential transfer.
Simeone is believed to be a strong advocate for González’s return, valuing his tactical flexibility and combative spirit. The Argentinian is capable of playing on both flanks, as either a winger or a wide midfielder, making him an attractive profile for the Atlético manager. González himself is reportedly receptive to a return to the Spanish capital, even indicating a willingness to accept a 20% reduction in his current salary to facilitate the move, demonstrating his preference for the club and its project.
The crux of the negotiation revolves around financial considerations. Atlético Madrid has consistently viewed the initial €32 million release clause as excessive, aiming for a more modest valuation of around €26 million. This possibility may diminish as the June 30th deadline approaches, after which previously favourable conditions may no longer apply. This timeline could strengthen Juventus’s negotiating position, particularly given the reported interest from the Spanish side. Atlético Madrid now faces a delicate decision: pursue a deal in the coming weeks or explore alternative targets in the transfer market.
