Juventus are again showing interest in Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to reports in Italy. The 26-year-old was previously a target for both Juventus and AC Milan in January, but a potential move failed to materialize due to concerns over a knee injury.
Mateta’s form since then has been impressive, culminating in the winning goal in the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano. He subsequently earned a place in the French national team squad, displacing Randal Kolo Muani, who Juventus are also pursuing. The renewed interest from Juventus comes as the club navigate a complicated contract renewal with current striker Dusan Vlahovic and prepare to discuss a potential deal for Kolo Muani following the Champions League final.
Juventus initially identified Mateta in January as a potential replacement for the injured Vlahovic, envisioning him as a long-term solution up front. However, negotiations stalled due to Crystal Palace’s demands for a loan with an obligation to buy, and the player’s representatives seeking favorable terms. The club then turned to Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri as an alternative.
AC Milan also pursued Mateta around the same time, but their interest cooled after medical examinations revealed the extent of his knee issues, which required surgery. The Rossoneri deemed the risk of a €35 million investment too high given the potential for further complications. Mateta ultimately opted for conservative treatment and successfully returned to form, scoring five goals between mid-March and the end of the season. Crystal Palace currently value Mateta at over €30 million, but Juventus may find negotiating a deal more challenging this time around. His current contract with the London club runs until 2027, and his recent performances have increased his market value.
This renewed pursuit of Mateta suggests Juventus are exploring multiple options to strengthen their attack ahead of next season, with Vlahovic’s future uncertain and Kolo Muani representing a potentially more expensive alternative.
