Hamburger SV are poised to appoint Bayern Munich executive Kathleen Krüger as their new board member for sport, according to multiple reports. The move would see Krüger fill a role left vacant since Stefan Kuntz departed the club under a cloud in January. The HSV supervisory board reportedly backed her appointment at a meeting on Tuesday evening, with a contract expected to be signed shortly.
Krüger currently serves as head of organisation and infrastructure at Bayern Munich, a role that encompasses oversight of the club's famed Säbener Strasse training facility and broader operational logistics. At Hamburg, she is set to jointly lead the executive board alongside finance director Eric Huwer. According to reports, her remit will include organisation, infrastructure, and corporate communications, while sporting director Claus Costa will retain responsibility for transfer dealings.
The position has been open for four months following the abrupt exit of former Germany international Kuntz, who left amid allegations of serious misconduct. The club has been seeking a high-calibre candidate to stabilise its sporting operations as it continues its pursuit of promotion back to the Bundesliga, having finished third in the 2. Bundesliga this past season.
Krüger's move represents a significant step in her career, transitioning from a major operational role at Germany's most successful club to a broader executive position at a historic club with immense pressure to return to the top flight. Her background in infrastructure and organisation is seen as a key asset for Hamburg, a club with a large-scale stadium and academy setup that requires meticulous management.
The appointment, once finalized, would see a rare female appointment to a senior sporting board position in German football. It signals Hamburg's intent to build a modern, structured executive team as they plan for the future, whether in the second division or, they hope, back in the Bundesliga.
