Robbie Keane is set to leave his position as manager of Ferencvaros, sparking renewed speculation about a potential return to Celtic. The news, initially reported by a fan group and subsequently confirmed by Hungarian outlets including m4sport.hu, comes as Celtic search for a permanent successor to Martin O'Neill, who is preparing to retire.
Celtic recently secured the Scottish Premiership title, but the season was largely considered underwhelming, prompting a likely overhaul of personnel both on and off the pitch. The Hoops had previously considered Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou for the vacancy, but he has since accepted the head coach role at Toulouse.
Keane, 45, was previously linked with the Celtic job following the departures of Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy. He recently expressed some disappointment with Ferencvaros’ season, where they finished second in the NB I league despite winning the Hungarian Cup and impressing in the Europa League. Keane had signed a contract extension with the club in December, indicating a long-term commitment.
Despite stating just last week that he was “feeling good” at Ferencvaros and planned to return “even more determined” after a short break, Keane is now poised to depart. However, his next destination may not be Glasgow. Reports suggest Slovan Bratislava are also interested in appointing the former Republic of Ireland international.
Slovan Bratislava CEO Ivan Kmotrik has confirmed Keane is on their shortlist, alongside other candidates including former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure. Kmotrik stressed that no decision has been made and that Keane is one of five potential appointments being considered. Ferencvaros have yet to officially confirm Keane’s departure, leaving his future uncertain and the possibility of a return to Celtic still open.
